The Poor People’s Campaign; A National Call for Moral Revival is uniting tens of thousands of people across the country to challenge the evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nation’s distorted morality.

This Sunday, May 13th, the Poor People’s Campaign kicks off 40 Days of Action on Mother’s Day in DC. If you live in or around DC, there is a Facebook event for this Sunday’s Mass Meeting that may be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/610289902638235/

Beginning on Monday May 14th, most states will have actions at their state legislatures each Monday, teach-ins each Tuesday, events with music on Wednesday, and cultural events each Thursday through the weekend. Each week has a theme, outlined below, that highlight the diverse and complex practices and policies that threaten people’s lives.  We need everyone who is able to participate. Please identify a way you can participate and support this important effort. If you can’t get to your state’s capitol, consider writing a letter to the editor related to one of the weekly themes.

 Weekly themes:

  • Week One (May 13-19): Child Poverty, Women and the Disabled – Somebody’s Hurting our People
  • Week Two (May 20-26): Systemic Racism, Voter Suppression and Immigration
  • Week Three (May 27-June 2): The War Economy, Veterans & Education, Gun Violence
  • Week Four (June 3-9): Ecological Devastation and Health
  • Week Five (June 10-16): Systemic Poverty, Jobs, Income & Housing – Everybody’s Got a Right to Live
  • Week Six (June 17-22): Challenging the Nation’s Distorted Moral Narrative – a New and Unsettling Force
  • June 23rd – Mass rally and 24-hour vigil in Washington, D.C. and Global Day of Solidarity

As Peace & Justice leaders it is our challenge, responsibility and honor to bring our knowledge of how militarism and today’s endless wars affect each of these areas; from relentless military recruitment of low income youth to the fact that the world’s number one source of environmental devastation is the US military, and that the discretionary budget squanders hundreds of billions on weapons and wars that are needed for people and communities. Please bring your voice and energy to these events, volunteer when you can, and prepare to build on these 40 days of action to build power to affect local, regional, and national change.

Looking forward to a fantastic 40 days of action throughout our country!

In Solidarity!
