We Can't Go Back to Normal: A Moral Response to Coronavirus
Right now, states are beginning to reopen, against the best recommendations of doctors, public health officials and other experts. On May 21, the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival responded with a national day of action calling for people to Stay in Place! Stay Alive! Organize! State legislatures, governors, and the federal government must not put millions of people, especially the poor, at risk. Read more...

Ending the United States' Longest War
In February 2020, the United States and the Taliban signed an agreement laying the groundwork for a full withdrawal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan and ending the United States' longest war. The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) has issued a new report on a responsible path forward which draws on extensive interviews with experts in diplomacy, crisis response and planning, military affairs, and state-building. Peace and Disarmament Work Amidst the Pandemic: Global Perspectives
The Abolition 2000 Global Network for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, of which several UFPJ groups are members, held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) via Zoom on May 23. A diverse group of activists and analysts from around the world shared their thoughts about the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, and how it will affect prospects for peace and disarmament. The Abolition 2000 AGM on May 23 unanimously adopted a statement condemning recent reports of White House discussions to resume nuclear weapons testing: "Absolutely Unacceptable: Resumed Nuclear Explosive Testing."

Global Civil Society Demands Action on Nuclear Disarmament from NPT States Parties
UFPJ joined more than 80 civil society organizations in endorsing a joint statement to the states parties of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This diverse network of national and international peace and nuclear disarmament NGOs are urging government leaders, particularly from the nuclear-armed states and their allies, to act with greater urgency and cooperation to meet unfulfilled promises to reduce nuclear risks and to realize their commitment under the Treaty to the "complete elimination of nuclear weapons." Kings Bay Ploughshares Disarmament Protesters to be Sentenced
The Kings Bay Plowshares 7 Sentencing is scheduled for May 28 and 29, 2020 for the Trident Disarmament Action Against Nuclear Weapons. Seven activists symbolically disarmed a Trident submarine on April 4, 2018 at a naval base in Kings Bay Georgia, proclaiming, "Nuclear weapons eviscerate the rule of law, enforce white supremacy, perpetuate endless war and environmental destruction and ensure impunity for all manner of crimes against humanity." Global #FREEZEWeapons Campaign
UFPJ has endorsed the new Global #FREEZEWeapons Campaign to urge our own and other countries to freeze weapons production, trade and supply. Propelled by the devastating impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus globally, the SCRAP Weapons team at SOAS University of London is building on the United Nations Secretary General's call for a Global Ceasefire in all corners of the world. On April 25, a broad coalition of organizations presented the Online World Conference 2020: Abolish Nuclear Weapons; Resist and Reverse Climate Change; For Social and Economic Justice. The conference focused on the continuing urgent need to abolish nuclear weapons and its relationship to addressing the climate emergency and challenging injustices which have left so many people marginalized and vulnerable.
