From the Korean Peninsula, to the South China Sea, to the Middle East and South Asia, all the nuclear-armed states are engaged in unpredictable conflicts that could catastrophically escalate out of control. Tensions between the United States and Russia have risen to levels not seen since the Cold War, with the two nuclear giants confronting each other in Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and Syria and an accelerated tempo of military exercises and war games, both conventional and nuclear, on both sides. Risky close encounters between Russian and U.S./NATO forces have increased dramatically in the Baltic region and Syria.

Ominously, all the nuclear-armed nations are engaged in a new nuclear arms race. Despite their animosities toward each other, they are united in opposition to the new Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW or Ban Treaty), and the original nuclear-armed states are continuing to ignore their obligations under the 1970 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to end the arms race at an early date and to negotiate “in good faith” the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Following the sudden end of the Cold War, after decades of difficulty in focusing attention on the crucial need for nuclear abolition, there are signs of a developing global nuclear abolition movement to respond to these dangers.

These include the July 2017 vote in the United Nations by 122 countries to adopt the Ban Treaty and the Nobel Peace Prize award to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons; the Don’t Bank on the Bomb Campaign; nonviolent direct acts of resistance such as the Memorial Day protest at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts and the April Kings Bay Plowshares Action; and unanimous adoption by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, in June, of a sweeping Mayors for Peace resolution “Calling on the Administration and Congress to Step Back From the Brink and Exercise Global Leadership in Preventing Nuclear War.”

Since 2006 UFPJ has declared August Nuclear Free Future Month. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Take action! August 6th and 9th will mark the 73rd anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Rallies, marches, vigils and nonviolent direct actions are planned across the country and around the world. Click here to find an action near you. Click here to find more actions, listed by date. Join any and all of these actions that you can!

Enroll your Mayor in Mayors for Peace! Mayors for Peace, founded in 1982 by the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is working for a world without nuclear weapons and safe and resilient cities as essential measures for the realization of lasting world peace. Mayors for Peace has grown to 7,632 cities in 163 countries, with 213 U.S. members, representing in total over one billion people. Mayors for Peace aims to reach 10,000 members by 2020, the 75th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Click here to find out if your Mayor is a member of Mayors for Peace. Click here to find out how to enroll your Mayor.

During the 1980’s, fear of nuclear war was by far the most visible issue of concern to the American public and people around the world. Yet following the end of the Cold War, nuclear weapons fell off the public’s radar screen. It was almost as if the planet itself breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Meanwhile, deeply embedded in the military-industrial complex, military planners and scientists at the nuclear weapons labs conjured up new justifications to sustain the nuclear weapons enterprise. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1991 Colin Powell, then-Chair of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, declared: “We no longer have the luxury of having a [specific] threat to plan for. What we plan for is that we’re a superpower. We are the major player on the world stage with responsibilities… [and] interests around the world.”

At its first national assembly in 2003, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) adopted a proposal put forward by Abolition 2000 member groups, to make nuclear abolition “a” priority. The proposal was adopted without much discussion or understanding. At the time we were focused on ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and nuclear weapons were seen by many as a peripheral issue. Over the years, nuclear weapons have moved from the periphery to the center of anti-war concerns and UFPJ’s work.

Today, nearly 15,000 nuclear weapons, most an order of magnitude more powerful than the U.S. atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki— 92% held by the United States and Russia, continue to pose an intolerable threat to humanity. All of the nuclear-armed states are upgrading their nuclear arsenals, and the dangers of wars among them are growing.

On January 25, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of its symbolic Doomsday Clock 30 seconds closer to the end of humanity. It is now set at two minutes to midnight—as close as it’s ever been set since its inception in 1947. In moving the clock 30 seconds closer to the hour of the apocalypse, the Bulletin cited “the failure of President Trump and other world leaders to deal with looming threats of nuclear war and climate change”, and declared, “the world is as threatening as it has been since World War II.”

We stand at a nuclear crossroads, in a sharply divided world. Last July the majority of the world’s countries voted to adopt a historic treaty to prohibit the possession, development, testing, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons. While the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) represents the total repudiation of nuclear weapons by most of the states that don’t possess them, the U.S. and the eight other nuclear-armed states, along with Japan, Australia, South Korea and all but one of the 28 NATO member states (The Netherlands) – all countries under the U.S. nuclear umbrella, boycotted the negotiations. (Click here for more information about the TPNW.)

We must keep both realities – the promise of the Ban Treaty and growing dangers of nuclear war – fully in mind as we urgently work for a world without nuclear weapons.

In June, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, (USCM), unanimously adopted a sweeping Mayors for Peace resolution “Calling on the Administration and Congress to Step Back From the Brink and Exercise Global Leadership in Preventing Nuclear War.” The resolution rejected the general hysteria that followed Trump’s meetings with Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin.

Make no mistake. Donald Trump is a dangerous unhinged megalomaniac, unfit for office, who is taking a wrecking ball to the domestic and international orders – to the detriment of millions of ordinary people. Yet, the hysteria following his meetings with Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin is truly frightening. Media pundits and Congressional leaders from both parties would apparently rather remain poised for nuclear war than risk talking with “the enemy”.

The USCM resolution also “urges the United States government to reverse its stance and to embrace the TPNW as a welcome step towards negotiation of a comprehensive agreement on the achievement and permanent maintenance of a world free of nuclear arms”, and “calls on the President and Congress to reverse federal spending priorities and to redirect funds currently allocated to nuclear weapons and unwarranted military spending to support safe and resilient cities….”, along with other measures.

Click here to read the complete text of the USCM resolution. This resolution is designed to be used by a number of campaigns currently underway, including Back from the Brink, Divest From the War Machine, and the Treaty Compliance Campaign. Circulate it widely as an educational and advocacy tool. Quote it in op-eds and letters to the editor. Send it to your Congressional representatives. Consider asking your City Council to endorse the resolution.
Secretary of State John Kerry and President Hamid Karzai are finalizing negotiations to keep as many as 10,000 troops in Afghanistan for years to come. The Obama Administration’s deadline to reach an agreement is Thursday, October 31.
No compelling case has been made for why it is necessary to leave U.S. troops in Afghanistan. All indicators literally scream for an end to the War in Afghanistan with a total withdrawal of all troops:

Some readers probably heard on the news how the Democrats were hopping mad when the House Republicans voted recently to overturn the “sequester” on the Pentagon budget, enacted at the end of the year as part of the deficit reduction deal. With that money restored, House Republicans cheerfully went about their business of making up the difference by slashing food stamps, Medicaid for children, federally supported Meals-on-Wheels for the elderly and other programs that help the most vulnerable. Democrats were united in opposing this move and promptly incorporated it into the campaign narrative of hard-hearted, mean-spirited Republicans, whom they are determined to challenge and expose come November.‘Bloated’ does not begin to describe the annual US military budget.

But one odd thing occurred last week. In the House Armed Services Committee, when the Republicans put forward a sequester- busting $642.5 billion for the 2013 Defense Authorization bill, Democrats on the Committee overwhelmingly supported it in a lop-sided vote of 56-5.

In every respect this is an appalling bill. Apart from the colossal waste of money, it includes $88 billion for a war in Afghanistan that the majority of Americans oppose; nuclear upgrades that threaten non-proliferation agreements; programs and weapons that even the Pentagon doesn’t want. The bill also promotes reckless threats on Iran, enables reckless actions by Israel and once again prohibits the transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to the United States.

On Thursday Representative Barbara Lee, who has been valiantly opposing the war in Afghanistan before it even began, introduced amendment #158 that would limit funding for the war to the safe and responsible removal of all US troops and security contractors from the country. Showing greater strength than previously, 113 members of the House voted in favor. It’s a sign of progress, albeit snail-like, that this many Representatives were willing to stand up and take a clear position. On the other hand, it’s a remarkable commentary on our democracy that 303 Representatives voted to continue a war, which the American public now rejects.

Throughout this week Congressional progressives and libertarians have been battling for valuable amendments that would curtail drone attacks, prevent a military confrontation with Iran and strike out “indefinite detentions.” However, at the end of the day, HR 4310 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) remains an outrageous bill, which no self-respecting member of Congress should be supporting. Partisan rhetoric must not be allowed to obscure the reality that if this over-sized military budget passes the Congress, it will be paid for by the middle and working class and especially the poor.

It makes no sense to excoriate Republicans for lifting the sequester on military spending and then yielding to their request for $642.5 billion for the Pentagon.

This inconsistency persists when constituents are not paying attention to what their elected officials are up to. On Friday May 18, it will be easy to follow the story: members of Congress will be voting on the FY 2013 Defense Authorization. Every person in reach of a cell-phone can do something useful today: call your Representative’s office and make it clear that voters are paying attention and that if he or she continues to feed the war-machine at the expense of truly urgent human needs, they should not expect constituent support come November.

Last week for the first time, the majority of Democrats voted in favor of the Lee Amendment limiting funding for the Afghanistan War to the safe and orderly withdrawal of US troops and security contractors. (101 ayes, 79 Noes). This represents a sea-change of opinion from the time that Rep. Barbara Lee stood alone among her House colleagues eleven years ago, challenging the wisdom of the war. It is unfortunately no surprise that this amendment was defeated 113-303. However, in our upcoming work it will be important to emphasize that the President’s political base is now in clear opposition to his Afghanistan war policy.

On the 2013 NDAA as a whole (HR 4310) we did better than anticipated with a final vote of 120 Noes and 299 Ayes. Fortunately the majority of Democrats voted against the 2013 NDAA. (104-77). The reasons for Democratic voting on this item are ambiguous because the White House itself was displeased with the final version of the bill and because civil liberties was also an important concern. Yet clearly for many Democrats a major factor was the size of the military budget at a time when domestic programs are under attack.

Going forward, it seems possible that with greater unity we might achieve a better result in the next round of votes. The bill now goes to the Senate, where there will be various efforts to shorten the American stay in Afghanistan and to cut billions from the Pentagon budget. Our Legislative Working Group will continue to support these initiatives, as well as stronger amendments to end the war in Afghanistan and to garner more NO votes against the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act.

When: Sunday May 20 Rally and March 9AM

Where: Rally Grant Park South of the Lincoln Monument at (E. Balbo Ave. and S. Columbus Dr.)

We, Afghanistan and Iraq veterans, from around the country will converge in Chicago on May 20th to march to the NATO summit and ceremoniously return our medals to NATO generals. We were awarded these medals for serving in the Global War on Terror, a war based on lies and failed polices. This endless war has killed hundreds of thousands, stripped the humanity of all involved, and drained our communities of trillions of dollars, diverting funds from schools, clinics, libraries, and other public goods.Iraq Veterans Against the War calls on fellow service members, veterans, Chicagoans, and everyone who believes in justice, dignity, and respect forall peoples to join us in the streets on May 20th. On this day, we will hold a nonviolent march to the site of the NATO summit where we will ceremoniously return our military service medals. We will demand that NATO immediately end the occupation of Afghanistan and relating economic and social injustices, bring U.S. war dollars home to fund our communities, and acknowledge the rights and humanity of all who are affected by these wars. We wish to begin a process of justice and reconciliation with the people of Afghanistan and other affected nations, fellow service members, veterans, and the American people.

The city of Chicago will host the NATO summit from May 20th-21st. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an organization of western military superpowers whose combined military might is the world’s largest and most powerful military force. The NATO mission in Afghanistan has dragged on for over a decade, to the detriment of the people of Afghanistan, military service members and their families, and our communities.

The recent news that the G8 summit, originally set to take place in Chicago this May, has been moved to Camp David shows that the world’s large economies fear the mass mobilization and collective organizing of the people of Chicago. NATO should also be advised that the world’s military superpowers, responsible for unjust wars, occupations, and militarism, are also not welcome in our hometown. We are emboldened by the knowledge that Chicagoans’ call for popular mobilizations was enough to move the G8 out of our city. We must now harness this same people power to send the message loud and clear to NATO that they too will be met with resistance. Furthermore, even though the G8 and NATO will now be held apart from each other, we know that these two summits, and the interests they represent, are linked. War, austerity, poverty, and economic exploitation by the 1% go hand in hand.

It is time for us to take a stand and make our voices heard. We stand in international solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and all the people of the world who are demanding their right to self-determination, their human rights, and economic justice.

Break Up BOA’s Business as Usual!

May 6-9, Charlotte, NC

On May 6-9 people from across the country and world will be converging in Charlotte, NC, home of Bank of America’s Headquarters and their annual Shareholder meeting, to demand an end to their practices that are bankrupting our economy and wrecking our climate.

Homeowners, students, immigrants, environmentalists, workers, women’s groups, peace activists and more will be in Charlotte, bringing their stories, hearts and communities to the fight against Bank of America and the economic inequality, racial injustice and environmental destruction they have wrought.

Bank of America is:

#1 forecloser of homes in the US,

#1 funder of the US coal industry,

Job killer by letting go of nearly 100,000 workers over the past several years,

Bonus Buster paying its top five executives over $500 million in bonuses,

Saddling students with a lifetime of debt, and

Financing the war machine.

Bank of America, and its profits-over-people-and-planet business model, is drowning our democracy through huge financial contributions to lobbyists that are serving the interests of the 1% and are participating in corporate-funded groups like American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the Financial Services Roundtable.

As a global community united for real economic and racial justice, it is time that BoA is held accountable, invest in public needs and services, or face being broken up to achieve the justice we need. Whether you are a community member, homeowner, worker or student, we need to come together to challenge corporate power and create an economy and democracy that works for all of us.

Tuesday, April 24th at 10am
Meet at Justin Herman Plaza
Mass sit-in and rally

March to Shareholder Meeting at Merchants Exchange Building 465 California St., SF

Wells Fargo has hurt millions of people around the country with their bad practices. Almost every section of our communities have been impacted by this bank and there are so many reasons why you need to come out and stand up to them.

On Tuesday, April 24, the 99% who have been devastated by Big Banks’ bad practices are stopping Wells Fargo Shareholders from having their same old Annual Meeting.

Instead of them discussing how they are going to continue to profit off the devastation of communities of color, we will be holding a Peoples’ Stakeholder meeting to share the stories of those of us most impacted by Wells Fargo’s greedy, racist practices.

Someone you know has been hurt by Wells Fargo, whether they are a senior fighting to save their home, a student struggling to afford school or a husband fighting to keep his wife from deportation and his family intact.

Enough is enough! We need to let them know that we will not stand by as they continue to hurt our families and communities.

Wells Fargo Bank is responsible for some of the worse abuses of public funds and resources. It has received $43.7 billion in bailout funds, but continues to foreclose on families and neglects to pay taxes.

One in five foreclosures in the nation are concentrated in California and Wells Fargo owns a significant portion of loans that they have allowed to go into foreclosure.

Here are the numbers: Wells Fargo Bank is the lender on almost 2,000 (1,745) homes in San Francisco that are in some stage of foreclosure. That’s almost 12% of the 14,956 homes in San Francisco that are in some stage of foreclosure

Their application of the federally approved Home Affordable Modification Program, (HAMP) which aim to lower monthly payments so that distressed homeowners can avoid foreclosure, has been negligible.

Numbers for Wells Fargo as of Feb 2011 show that only 77,402 homeowners got permanent modifications: a 22% rate of modification more than two years into the program.

Wells Fargo has canceled 118,697 trial modifications and denied 175,336 homeowners from accessing HAMP. Unlike other national banks, Wells Fargo has not changed its foreclosure procedures despite numerous confirmed reports of “robo-signing” and other illegalities in the foreclosure process.”

Not only that, over the last ten years, Wells Fargo paid the lowest worldwide tax rate of the top five big banks (24.8%–$27.5 billion on $110.9 billion pre-tax earnings) and reportedly did not pay any federal taxes in 2009.”

Private Prison And Detention Center Connections

Wells is no friend to immigrants either. In fact, it is a prison profiteer. As of December 31, 2010, Wells Fargo had $88.7 million, or 4 million shares invested in the GEO Group, http://www.geogroup.com/

in the nation’s second-largest private prison company, and $5.9 million, ½ shares, in CCA (Corrections Corporation of America) according to Security and Exchange Commission filings. Their combined prison holdings are valued upwards of 120 million. GEO and CCA spend millions lobbying against comprehensive immigration reform and for anti-immigrant legislation and share the same lobbyists in Washington D.C. firm, The Podesta Group.

Private Prisons receive an average of $122 a day per person in detention. The average number of people in detention is 30,000, which costs taxpayers over $3.7 million daily. HB87 is expected to create record profits for private prison companies, Georgia is already home to the largest detention center Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin (1752 capacity).

Wells Fargo and CCA made contributions to HB87 sponsor Georgia Senator Bill Hamrick. HB87 is considered to be one of the most draconian anti-immigrant measures in the country. GEO and CCA made contributions Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, who signed the anti-immigrant measure. CCA, GEO, and Wells Fargo made contributions to several politicians in State House and State Senate who voted in favor of HB87. GEO Group also sponsored and lobbied for Arizona’s HB 1070 law which is one of the worst anti-immigrant laws in the country

Wells Fargo uses its mutual funds, the money deposited by its clients, to invest in these private detention corporations. Wells Fargo is undermining San Francisco’s status as a sanctuary city by profiting off the criminalization of immigrants with immigrants’ own money.

Wells Fargo has its hands deep in this nation’s pockets and continues to take far more than its fair share. From homes, to interest on payday loans, to priosns and detention centers, to student loans to tax dollars, Wells Fargo’s profits
at the cost of our communities.

So join us on April 24, when we let Wells know that in their single-minded pursuit for profit, they are bankrupting the 99%!

Occupy Wallstreet stands in solidarity with the calls for a day without the 99%

On May 1st, 2012, we are creating a new kind of holiday – A People’s Holiday – One that’s not just yet another flavor of consumerism, but is explicitly about imagining a world beyond consumerism.

Because our struggles are one.

We are all united: the system that declares unionized workers are bad for business is the same system that decides human beings are a commodity that can be “illegal”. It’s also the same system that causes students to graduate college with so much debt that they must chain themselves to a career in something they despise, rather than pursue their passions. It’s the same system that measures the value of people by what they consume, and that measures the value of artists by how much they sell. It’s the same system that believes you can put a price on a sustainable planet.

It’s a system of people.
It’s a system of us.

This system exists because we participate in it. So the first thing we need to do, to remove the power the system holds over us, is to change ourselves: to withdraw our participation.

We can withdraw, for one day, and begin to enact a new world, together: one of a return to old values, to mutual aid, to community, to hope and aspiration and faith — not in any leaders, but in each other, and ourselves.

(Im)migrants, Students, Workers, The Unemployed, The Underemployed, Mothers, Fathers, Sons, Daughters, Sisters, Brothers, Neighbors, New Yorkers, Comrades, Friends: We are all suffering while the 1% prosper, and if we do not personally feel the strain, we surely have loved ones who do. Whether we are looking for work, facing decreasing hours, braving dangerous working conditions for a paycheck that barely provides the means to survive, returning day after day to the boring jobs that drain our souls and prevent us from seeing our loved ones, collecting debt like a hobby because education, housing, and the cost of life are impossible to afford: it has become clear that the systems of the 1% were not created to support us and are incapable of doing so. Yet these very systems rely on our labor, our skills, and our compliance to function.

The 1% needs us to continue reaping their profits, but WE DON’T NEED THE 1%.
This May Day, Occupy Wall Street, in coalition with numerous other organizations and occupations, calls for a Day Without The 99%: No Work, No School, No Shopping, No Housework, No Compliance. Let’s take the streets, reclaim our communities, and support each other. NOT the 1%.

If you can’t strike call in sick. If you can’t call in sick hold a slow down. We know how to shut it down because we’re the ones that prop it up. If we continue to stand by while the 1% descimates our economy and destabalizes our lives, we will be powerless to challenge the forces that oppress us.

On May 1st, let us stand together to reclaim our jobs, our communities, our lives. Withdraw your consent and strike!

If you throw one stone, it’s a punishable offense. If a thousand stones are thrown, it’s political action

In May, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will meet in Chicago to plan continued counter-terrorism war in
Afghanistan beyond 2014, increases in military spending, future wars modeled after the disastrous Libyan regime change war,
and expansion of the so-called missile defense system. On the eve of the summit, the NATO-Free Future Network for Global Justice
and Peace, convened by the American Friends Service Committee and Peace Action, and endorsed by United for Peace and Justice,
will also be meeting to map out an alternative path in a Counter-Summit for Peace and Economic Justice on May 18 - 19.
Join us in Chicago.

The 2-day Counter-Summit for Peace and Economic Justice will have 24 workshops exploring ways to end and prevent wars,
to move the money from the Pentagon to meet real human needs, and to create a more equitable, just peaceful society.
Register for the conference and join the dialogue. Join us in Chicago where our list of speakers begins with
Vijay Prashad of Trinity College, Sarita Gupta, the Executive Director of Jobs with Justice, Tom Hayden,
lead author of the Port Huron Statement, Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies,
Tobias Pfluger until recently a member of the European Parliament, and many more.

Come to Chicago, to meet with Afghans for Peace during our Counter Summit and to support Afghanistan war veterans on May 20 as
they rally and march to the NATO Summit to return their military medals to the NATO Generals in a March for Justice and
Reconciliation.

Today, the public debate over every new international crisis or national security issue is framed by how, not if, we should use
military force. This is what we’re working to change. Check our website for new articles that explore the issues and challenges
we face in working towards a NATO free future.

Be the representatives of the 99% who suffer from the effects of a militarized federal budget and want an end to wars at the
Counter-Summit for Peace and Economic Justice.
