Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security (CPDCS): We also need to understand that this war for Venezuelan oil – the world’s largest known reserves – is not only about profits for Trump and his fossil fuel cronies, but it is a critical factor in the drive for regime change in Cuba. Coalition for Peace Action (New Jersey): President Trump just attacked Venezuela and kidnapped its president and his wife, saying the U.S. will now “run” the country. This is an act of war and an enormous violation of both international and domestic law. READ MORE

CODEPINK: This act of aggression is a continuation of U.S. attempts to seize and plunder Venezuela’s natural resources and undermine Venezuela’s sovereignty as well as the sovereignty of other countries in Latin America. Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL): This is a deeply immoral and unjust escalation of President Trump’s campaign of violence against Venezuela. It is an unauthorized act of war in violation of both domestic and international law. READ MORE.

Massachusetts Peace Action (MAPA): This administration is unusually blatant. The president openly says the United States is simply going to “run Venezuela,” as if that approach has not already failed catastrophically. It failed in Afghanistan and Iraq. It fails in Libya, Syria, and Yemen. It fails under presidents of both parties. READ MORE.

Pax Christi: We will continue to uphold the principle of the self-determination of peoples and stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the respect for their human rights, including the right to a dignified life for the community now in the diaspora. READ MORE.

Syracuse Peace Council: We cannot sit back and watch another war being started with propaganda and lies. We must rally in dissent of the aggression by the Trump administration. We must be in solidarity with Venezuelans who did not ask for U.S. military aggression. READ MORE.

Veterans for Peace (VFP): In flagrant violation of International Law, the U.S. bombed civilian and military areas of the city of Caracas, the capital of the Republic, and the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira in the early morning of Saturday January 3rd. Striking under the cover of darkness to maximize terror and psychological impact, the assault [killed] at least 80 people, including civilians, and destroyed vital Venezuelan infrastructure. World Beyond War: Trump has now bombed Venezuela, kidnapped its president, and claimed that he would run the country. This is utter destruction of any rule of law. READ MORE.

As you may know a group of U.S. peace activists are inside the DC Venezuelan Embassy and have been there lawfully for several weeks, to prevent a takeover of the space by right-wingers who are seeking to overthrow Venezuela’s elected government.

Gerry was outside the Venezuelan Embassy with other members of the Embassy Protection Collective trying to deliver food to those inside. When they were blocked by violent opposition, Gerry attempted to throw a cucumber through the window to someone inside. He was immediately surrounded by Secret Service police and thrown to the ground. His face was bloodied by three police who sat on him. He was subsequently taken away in a police wagon.

Call the Secret Service, which has the duty of guarding embassies, to state your objections to their unwarranted harsh treatment of nonviolent protesters:  202-406-8800.

Call your elected Representatives and the U.S. State Department to object to the U.S. imposed sanctions that have caused the deaths of 40,000 Venezuelans and to call for an end to attempted U.S. regime change in Venezuela. Capital Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. State Department: 202-647-6575.  

Now the power and water have now been cut to the Embassy. The situation is becoming critical.

EMERGENCY AT VENEZUELAN EMBASSY, D.C.: ACTIVISTS DEMAND ELECTRICITY AND WATER BE TURNED BACK ON — PRESS CONFERENCE 1PM TODAY

Last night, the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO), assisted by the U.S. Secret Service, cut off electricity to the activists lawfully residing inside the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, D.C, creating a dangerous emergency situation. This was done despite utility bills being fully paid by the owners of the building, which is the legitimate government of Venezuela, and despite the fact that the activists inside are invited guests of the Venezuelan government.

Activists have been residing inside the Venezuelan Embassy since mid-April to protect it from takeover by opposition forces as part of the U.S. orchestrated coup. Organized by CODEPINK, Answer Coalition, and Popular Resistance, they formed the Embassy Protection Collective. They are demanding that the electricity and water be turned back on, and that food and medicines be allowed inside.

Since May 1, the building — with the activists inside — has been besieged by a violent mob of Guaidó supporters, who have been preventing food, medicine, and supplies from entering with support from the U.S. Secret Service. the Secret Service and D.C. police are refusing to make arrests or ensure safety when peaceful activists outside the building are verbally and physically assaulted by the Guaidó supporters, or when they try to deliver food into the people inside.

At 1pm today the activists outside and inside the building will hold a press conference to address the situation and demand that U.S. authorities turn utilities back on. Cutting off water and electricity — with utility bills paid in full — is illegal and immoral.

CODEPINK is appalled at the administration’s violations of human rights — denying access to food, water, and electricity, allowing violent physical assaults to take place — and the administration’s violation of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations, which stipulate that diplomatic premises are inviolable. Maduro is the UN-recognized president, not Guaidó. Guaidó representatives have no right to the embassy. They cannot provide any diplomatic or consular services because they have no power inside Venezuela.

The Embassy Protection Collective calls on the Trump administration to either return the Embassy back into the hands of the elected Maduro government or to turn it over to a third country as a protectorate.

“It is totally ILLEGAL and dangerous for the U.S. cut off water and electricity, deny access to food, to those of us residing lawfully inside the embassy building as guests of the Venezuelan government. It would also be illegal and dangerous to hand over the keys of the embassy to an unelected opposition,” said CODEPINK Paki Weiland. “I believe in peace and the rule of law, and we are the legal tenants of this Embassy with permission from the Venezuelan government. There is no reason why the U.S. administration and police presence should be assisting the opposition’s attempts to starve us out of the building.”

“The violence and denial of access to food and water taking place at the Venezuelan Embassy in D.C. is a microcosm of the what is taking place in Venezuela as the U.S. continues to try and orchestrate a coup,” said co-founder of CODEPINK Medea Benjamin. “It is dangerous and appalling. The U.S. administration must immediately turn water and electricity back on, allow food into the building, and protect activists outside from being physically assaulted.”
