United for Peace & Justice invites you to join us for a special webinar: “End Racism. Build Peace”

Wednesday, September 21, the UN International Day of Peace

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. But achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms. It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their race.

The 2022 theme for the International Day of Peace is “End racism. Build peace.” To mark this day, United for Peace & Justice hosted a webinar on Wed. Sept. 21, at 8 pm EDT/5 pm PDT.

Our distinguished speakers include:

“My home town of Hiroshima wishes for a peaceful world without nuclear weapons. We fold paper cranes with a prayer for peace. Regardless of different nationalities, skin color, culture and religion, our wishes for peace are borderless and connected by a rainbow bridge. This painting depicts people from various backgrounds holding hands and sharing paper cranes. Children from around the world cross over a rainbow on the back of paper cranes. With a wish for a world in which children can walk into a bright future in their “peaceful towns,” I designed the picture with a motif of glittering stained glass.”

The recent entry into force of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons brought a welcome positive moment to a bleak disarmament landscape. But none of the nuclear armed states have joined the Treaty, and all are expanding or modernizing their nuclear arsenals. This webinar, hosted by UFPJ, provided an update on nuclear weapons policies and programs and an overview of relevant developments in international law. It also suggested the need to rethink familiar approaches to disarmament, and to shift the focus of disarmament advocacy from recognizing the effects of nuclear weapons to analyzing the causes of nuclear arms racing and of the risks of war among nuclear-armed countries – the same root causes driving many of our other most pressing crises.

This webinar featured three internationally recognized advocates for nuclear abolition.

Jackie Cabasso, Executive Director of the Western States Legal Foundation, based in Oakland, California, since 1984. In 1995 she was a “founding mother” of the Abolition 2000 Global Network to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons, and she continues to serve on its Coordinating Committee. Since 2007 she has served as an Executive Advisor to Mayors for Peace. She is a National Co-convener of UFPJ. Jackie was the 2008 recipient of the International Peace Bureau’s Sean MacBride Peace Award. Presentation text part 1 part 2

John Burroughs, Senior Analyst for the New York City-based Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy (LCNP). He has represented LCNP in Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty meetings and negotiations on the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons. His articles and op-eds have appeared in publications including Fordham International Law Journal, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Arms Control Today, Newsweek, and Newsday. Presentation Text

Andrew Lichterman, policy analyst and lawyer with the Oakland, California-based Western States Legal Foundation. He has represented peace and environmental activists in a variety of settings, and also taught at alternative law schools for many years. He is a member of the United for Peace and Justice Coordinating Committee. Presentation text

Three speakers: Emad Kiyaei (Iran) from the Middle East Treaty Organization project; Tarja Cronberg (Finland), from the SIPRI European security program, and; Jamal Abdi, president of the US-based, National Iranian American Council, shared their thoughts on how we have reached the situation we’re in, what the different interests in play are, and how events may pan out in the near future, with the 2020 NPT Review Conference on the horizon. The webinar was moderated by Abolition 2000 Coordinating Committee member, Sharon Dolev (Israel), with the Israeli Disarmament Movement.

Trump and the Pentagon are pressing yet another massive increase in military spending. Critics from Washington think tanks working with the Poor People’s Campaign, reinforced by grassroots activists across the country are demanding that money be moved from wars and preparations for wars to addressing our urgent human needs: health, climate, housing, education and more.

Want to learn more about divesting from the war machine? Tune in on Tuesday, July 2nd to learn divestment strategies and tactics that are working across the US.

Sign up for the webinar!

Divestment is an incredibly powerful tool we’re using to end the financing stream to corporations that are making a killing on killing. We have the power to revoke their license on profiting from death and destruction by leveraging power where we have it: our retirement funds, schools, municipalities, churches, and banks. It’s also a powerful tool to build the anti-war movement in your community.

We’ll take a closer look at winning strategies and tactics, lessons learned, and case studies behind divestment campaigns. I’ll be talking about our current projects with two other accomplished activists: David Swanson, Co-founder and Executive Director of World Beyond War and Susi Snyder, Nuclear Disarmament Program Manager from PAX and author of the Don’t Bank on the Bomb reports.

What: Webinar on divesting from the war machine
