The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore hosts an End the War! End the Occupation! rally on Thurs., May 3 starting at 5 PM in Mount Vernon at Centre & Charles Sts. At 5:30 PM, there will be a march with a commemorative coffin to the Maryland National Guard Armory on Howard St. to call for the Maryland Guard to stay home. Many units are scheduled to be sent to Iraq this summer. The Pledge gathers in Mount Vernon on the first Thursday of the month to protest the war. Call Max at 410-366-1637.

Last year, the Bush administration announced with some fanfare a new phase in the peace process” between Israel and the Palestinian people. But what has happened since then? What does life look like on the ground? Find out by hearing peace activist Pam Rasmussen tell stories from her recent trip to Palestine as a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement. Pam is an active member of Peace Action Montgomery County, and this was her second trip to Palestine.

Anna Baltzer is a Jewish American peace worker who spent eight months in Israel and the Occupied Territories documenting human rights abuses and supporting nonviolent direct action in the West Bank with the International Women's Peace Service. She has been touring the United States ever since, giving an incredible talk that clearly explains what is going on in that part of the world and why.

This DVD presentation contains Anna Baltzer's superb and well documented talk – and also includes photos, charts, facts, commentary and ideas for action.

Featuring guest speakers:

Mai Abdul Rahman, founder and president of American Palestinian Women’s Association, is a strong voice for the people of Palestine and a student of the history of the Gaza region.

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink and Global Exchange, recently returned from leading a delegation of 60 women to Gaza. Her first hand stories and impressions are very moving! She will be returning to Gaza with another delegation in the near future.

Because this is a benefit, we are asking for a minimum donation of $10 at the door. Checks can be made out to HCCPJ. All donations will go to provide school supplies, backpacks and playground equipment for children in Gaza.

Bette Hoover recently returned from a trip to the Negev Desert where she stayed with a Bedouin family. She is a U.S. contact for the work of BUSTAN, www.bustan.org, an organization that works to bring environmental justice to the Negev and human rights to Bedouins.

The once proud indigenous people of the desert known as the Bedouins are now the poorest of Israeli citizens and struggle for survival. The State of Israel has seized their land for industry, electrical plants, prisons, military testing and Jewish-only communities. Tens of thousands live in unrecognized villages that don’t appear on the map and don’t receive any governmental services.

The Howard County Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation (HCCEIO) and Washington Interfaith Alliance for Middle East Peace (WIAMEP) invite you to a reception marking the opening of a month-long display at Howard County Central Library of the Nakba Photo Exhibit: “The Story of the Palestinians, 1948 to 2009.” George Hishmeh, a survivor of the Nakba, will be present to talk about his experiences and discuss the photos. Eye-Witness Report on the Gaza Freedom March

In December 2009 almost 1400 activists from 43 countries took part in the Gaza Freedom March, an attempt to break the blockade of Gaza being imposed by the Israeli and Egyptian governments.

Jean Athey, who participated in the march, is Coordinator of Peace Action Montgomery and a member of the Board of Peace Action. In October 2008 Jean also volunteered with the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine for the olive harvest and at the Jerusalem home of a Palestinian family threatened with eviction by the Israeli government.



The “Other” Gaza: The Gaza You Never Hear About, and Should

Pam Bailey spent 40 days trying to get into Gaza through Rafah, Egypt, then finally succeeded with the help of UNRWA. For the last five months, she has lived and worked in Gaza, sharing a local family's home, helping indigenous NGOs communicate to the outside world, writing for news services such as Truthout and InterPress Service, and volunteering with the International Solidarity Movement. Now she is back in the States, and she will share a view of Gaza that most people here don't hear about. This will be her first "report back."
