Israel/Palestine: a view from inside the West Bank
Saturday, February 28th 2009 1:30 PM
What’s it like to live and work in the West Bank…in the ancient city of Hebron and in a shepherd village in the south Hebron hills? How does the Israeli-Palestinian conflict affect the everyday life of families there? How do members of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) work to reduce the violence inherent under occupation? What are Israeli human rights groups doing in the struggle for peace with justice in this land that means so much to both peoples?

Are you interested in an inside perspective, one you're not likely to hear on the evening news or read in your daily paper? Paul Rehm served in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with CPT in Israel/Palestine, and willshare with us the experiences that shaped his days and nights under apartheid. Albany, New York

Press conference to launch new book about Albany sting case
Friday, October 2nd 2009 2:30 pm
Media and supporters are invited to a press conference to mark the publication of a new book, Rounded Up: Artificial Terrorists and Muslim Entrapment After 9/11, about the Albany, NY Aref-Hossain sting case. Its author is Dr. Shamshad Ahmad, president of the Masjid As-Salam mosque in Albany.
Rounded Up, written from a Muslim-American’s perspective, is a thoroughly researched, well-documented, inside view of the case from its beginning in 2003, to the FBI raid of the mosque and the men’s arrests in 2004, through the 2006 trial, to its tragic end in 2007 with the sentencing of Imam Yassin Aref and Mohammed Hossain, the two Muslims convicted of aiding terrorism who are now each serving 15 years in federal prison.
Rounded Up is the only comprehensive account of the Albany case available to date, and there is only one other book on the market about a domestic terrorism case itself. Thus Rounded Up is an important contribution to the new body of literature about the government’s preemptive prosecution of Muslims in America.

Beacon, New York

RSVP  • The Dissident Folk & Arts Festival
Saturday, October 11th 2008 6PM
The 2008 edition of the DISSIDENT FOLK & ARTS FESTIVAL will surely be the best yet. Our third anual Festival will feature a wide array of topical musicians, protest poets, radical theatre artists and activist guest speakers in preparation for the clear uphill climb to November. No, the Dissident Folk & arts Festival is not partisan, just damned dissident in the face of an 8-year long stretch of government gone wrong.

In the grand tradtion of cultural workers who struggled for unions and on behalf of the impoverished millions in during the Great Depression, who sang and physically fought against the fascists during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, who braved the drowning dark waters of Red Scare HUAC, who marched on Washington and southern state houses for Civil Rights, who were in the thicket of embroilment of the anti-war movement, the fight for equality and the ongoing battle for social justice. This tradition of the cultural worker is a prideful one and we are honored to offer a yearly showcase of such a tradtion, seemingly the ONLY such festival dedicated solely to protest arts in this nation.

This year's Festival, that which perhaps will lead up to the last days of the Bush Doctrine, is a fighting effort which presents music, poetry, theatre and discussion befitting of these times. Performance will range from topical song about current struggles to introspective improvisational theatre to emotive poetry and vexing talk. Special segments will include A TRIBUTE TO BERTOLT BRECHT (still one of the finest examples of an artist dedicated to social change) by Beacon duet The Flames of Discontent and Saugerties dramatist/teacher Michael Strong, and a finale SONG CIRCLE IN MEMORY OF UTAH PHILLIPS, the recently-passed folksinger and Industrial Worker of the World.

Performers include...

****noted protest singer BEV GRANT and her group THE DISSIDENT DAUGHTERS performing
a powerful set that brings to mind a radical Andrews Sisters, or a dissentful 60s
'girl group', perhaps a Leftist version of the McGuire Sisters. In any case,
it all swings in harmony and has the lyrical intensity to set the record straight.
We are pleased to note that this Brooklyn-based group makes the trek up to Beacon
each year to be a part of this Festival. (www.bevgrant.com)

****Alternative Protest Song group THE FLAMES OF DISCONTENT will work in
collaboration with Revolutionary Dramatist MICHAEL STRONG to offer a TRIBUTE TO
BERTOLT BRECHT (performing militant anti-fascist songs and poetry from the 1920s
and 30s for which Brecht collaborated with composers HANNS EISLER and KURT WEILL;
we're proud to note that these dangerous songs led to the poet and composers
to be put on the Nazi hit-list!) (www.flamesofdiscontent.org)

****musician/activist CHRIS RUHE & vocalist ALVIN BELL will present a set of
FREEDOM SONGS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. Some special guests have been invited
to join these two seasoned Beaconites who will kick out a powerful set which will
get your feet stomping and bring to mind the struggle for equality that was---and
continues on. Oh and the rhythm section behind them will be we two Flames of Discontent,
with Laurie Towers on bass and your's truly on drums (it feels great to be drumming
again!). (www.chrisruhe.com)

****improvisational theatre troupe THE HUDSON RIVER PLAYBACK THEATRE, one of several
such groups throughout the New York area, will create a dramatic work with the audience
as they explore contemporary issues, morays and matters of conscience. This troupe
was featured in the latest issue of 'Chronogram' magazine, a wide-spread
Hudson Valley arts/news/entertainment mag. (www.hudsonriverplayback.org)

****folk expansionists HOPE MACHINE, a group that has been getting around everywhere
as of late, will play one of their usually excellent sets of protest and people's
songs. Their members--the core of which is Fred Gillen Jr and Steve Kirkman--have
been making the rounds iof so many folk festivals, Woody Guthrie celebrations and
even on TV: you may have seen Fred on the cable show about subway musicians!

****Mexican revolutionary musician ZENOTE SOMPANTLE, hailing from Poughkeepsie,
is a one-man musical dynamo who presents radical songs of his native country as
well as originals of social conscience. With stunning guitar skills and an intense,
emotional voice to match, Zenote is in demand to perform at many such events.

****radical poets ROBERT MILBY, SANA SHABAZZ, ADDISON GOODSON and LAWRENCE SOEHNEL
will be sprinkled throughout the Festival to add a purely lyrical touch to the music
and theatre. These are seasoned poets who write on a variety of issues but are largely
focusing their works on matters of social change. Each are special in their own
unique manner but each are part of the continuum of poet/cultural workers such as
Langston Hughes, Mike Gold and so many more. (www.robertmilby.com , whywomencry.com ,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAB_HocQ9-M )

****Hip-Hop poet OL SOUL is a young man who is currently on tour with the rising
Hip-Hop stars ReadNex Poetry Squad. As that group's shows often encompass workshops
to inspire young poets to explore social issues, Ol Soul had the chance yto discover
his own talents as a Hip-Hop poet and has made his mentors proud. His works bring
to mind the convergance of Public Enemy and Jack Kerouc. (www.myspace.com/1olsoul)

--Plus special guest speakers include JOHN CONNOR of the Pennsylvania-based Grassroots
Coalition for Environmental and Economic Justice, TRACY GIVENS of the Dutchess County
for Obama organization, and a representative from the Industrial Workers of the
World (www.iww.org)--

We will be closing the show with a song-circle TRIBUTE TO UTAH PHILLIPS, labor and
folk music legend who recently passed away.

Film Screening: "Plan Colombia: Cashing in on the Drug War Failure"
Saturday, February 28th 2009 1:30 pm
This documentary film, by Gerard Ungerman and Audrey Brohy, narration by Edward Asner, documents what many believe to be dangerous hypocrisy on the part of the US government. The film gives particular attention to the reasons behind the drug trade in Colombia (the world's biggest cocaine exporter),which include illegal trade funded by radicals, the corrupt government, and the simple fact that farmers harvest coca because they can't survive on the profits of legitimate food crops. Ungerman and Brohy also explore the link to America's notorious School of the Americas and how targeted aerial fumigation has destroyed perfectly legal natural resources in the mission to eradicate drugs crops. The film concludes that the US military industrial complex is cashing in on the violence they themselves perpetuate, while doing little to actually stem cocaine production.

RSVP  • Film: Body of War
Wednesday, September 10th 2008 7:30 p.m.
"Body of War" is a powerful documentary that tells the moving story of one veteran dealing with the aftermath of war. Tomas Young is an Iraq War veteran who was paralyzed from a bullet to the spine less than a week into his tour of duty. The film follows Young on a physical and emotional journey as he adapts to his new body and begins to question the decision to go to war in Iraq. From soldier to antiwar activist, the film takes an unflinching view of the physical and emotional aftermath of war through the eyes of an American hero. Three years in the making, it unfolds on two parallel tracks. On the one hand, we see Tomas evolving into a powerful voice against the war as he struggles to deal with the complexities of a paralyzed body. And on the other hand, we see the historic debate unfolding in the Congress about going to war in Iraq. The film was directed by former talk show host Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro.

The film is being shown as part of Hofstra University’s International Scene Lecture Series: War and the 2008 Elections. Series Co-Directors: Dr. Carolyn Eisenberg, Linda Longmire, Prof. Martin Melkonian.

Is the Occupation of Afghanistan the "Good War?"
Wednesday, August 13th 2008 7pm
After 7 years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, US rulers find themselves in a difficult situation: two occupations with no end in sight, their own population weary of both wars, and an economic recession.
Barack Obama argues that the war in Iraq is a distraction from the real fight and that Afghanistan should be the main front in the War on Terror. Yet situations in both countries are very similar with an untold amount of civilian casualties, a revival of sectarianism, women’s oppression, and growing civil war. Above all else the US occupations are loathed by ordinary Afghans and Iraqis alike. They have repeatedly expressed their desire to see the all foreign forces leave.
Please come discuss these urgent questions that face today’s antiwar movement: What is the purpose of the war on Afghanistan? How does it relate to the Iraq occupation? Is the occupation of Afghanistan “the good war”?

CONNECTING THE DOTS:SOLIDARITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE AMERICAS
Saturday, September 6th 2008 5pm
When the US government gives money to Latin American countries, this aid always goes towards supporting the richest and most powerful – and repressing those who dare to fight for equality and social justice. This is especially the case in Colombia and Mexico, whose governments collaborate openly with US economic interests and keep wealth concentrated in the hands of a small oligarchy at home. Meanwhile, governments such as those of Evo Morales in Bolivia, Chávez in Venezuela and Correa in Ecuador – who have tried to break away from US domination, nationalizing some industries and distributing more benefits and social services to poor and working people – face threats from right-wing forces. How can these US-backed forces be confronted? Is supporting left-wing presidents enough, or must ordinary people also organize actively to fight the right-wing oligarchy and international corporations? And most importantly, how can we support those fighting for social justice in Latin America from here in the US, given that here at home, our government imposes the same pro-corporate agenda that it does abroad, and ordinary people suffer as the economy worsens.

The Fight to End War and Occupation! From Iraq to Afghanistan to Palestine!
Wednesday, March 11th 2009 7pm
Millions around the country voted for Barak Obama with the hope and expectation that he would end the war in Iraq and reverse the Bush policy of aggressive military intervention. While Obama is talking about plans to reduce troops in Iraq, he has made it clear that many troops will stay indefinitely and just authorized 17,000 more troops for Afghanistan. In addition, the U.S. shows no sign of wavering in its support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Across the country, millions have protested the death and destruction of these wars. As the economy falls into crisis, threatening jobs, education and health care, the trillions spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations and the $3-5 billion a year in military aid to Israel calls into question the priorities of the people governing this country. What are the U.S.' real aims in supporting all of these occupations? How are they connected? How do we build a movement to force our government to invest in people and infrastructure, not death and destruction?

Come to a discussion of these and other questions. Then get on the bus to march on the Pentagon with us!

Marx is back: How socialist ideas can change the world!
Wednesday, March 25th 2009 7pm
They said that Marx was dead--that capitalism had triumphed. Then came the realities of globalization. Then came endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then came the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Now, Marx's ideas seem to explain the world a lot better than what you see on Fox News.

But Marx also predicted that the inequalities of capitalism would give rise to resistance. And we've only just begun to see the emergence of a new generation of struggles, from the protests for immigrant rights, to the factory occupations of workers in Chicago, to the massive outpouring of solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine.

Socialists believe that these struggles can be joined to fight for a different type of society--one in which greed, inequality, and war are replaced with solidarity and justice. Come to a discussion of Marx's ideas and how they apply to today, and then get involved in helping us to build a socialist movement! As Marx himself said, "Philosophers have only interpreted the world; the point is to change it!"

Guest Speakers:

Brian Jones Brian is a teacher, actor and activist in New York City. His commentary
and writing have been featured on GritTV, SleptOn.com, and the International
Socialist Review.

A WORLD WITHOUT BORDERS: SOCIALISM & IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS
Wednesday, April 29th 2009 7pm
Whereas corporations are relatively free to cross borders, workers are not. For big business, the question is how to ensure an abundant & cheap labor supply, and how to restrict it in periods when they don’t need it. Anti-immigration laws don’t prevent immigration any more than anti-drug laws prevent drug trafficking, but they make immigrants easier to exploit. Employers can hire undocumented workers at substandard wages and thus exploit them. Immigrant-bashing is also an effective tool to divide and weaken the working class. The most effective way to combat that is to build solidarity amongst workers – in the U.S. & abroad . Come to a discussion of how we can build a socialist movement for a world where workers are not pit against each other for jobs and resources.

Abortion Rights: Why We Need a New Movement‏
Wednesday, July 22nd 2009 7pm
Abortion rights are under attack. The right wing has waged a 35-year war on women's rights: now 51% of people consider themselves "pro-life". Abortion "alternative" clinics now outnumber abortion clinics 2 to 1. It is time to rebuild an abortion rights movement that is unapologetic in its demand for women's control of their own bodies.

Is a Revolution Possible in the U.S.?
Wednesday, December 16th 2009 7pm
CAN THERE be a revolution in the United States? The answer is yes. This country was founded by an act of revolution--which was followed by a second revolution in the Civil War, which finally outlawed the system of slavery. But the obvious next question, of course, is: How can there be a revolution in the United States? The most urgent question we face is how we can begin to lay the groundwork for that revolutionary transformation of this society. It isn't going to happen overnight, but it can happen--with a longer-term perspective and an understanding of the revolutionary process. Come join a discussion on how we can get rid of the defunct systme of capitalism & replace it with socialism.

Real Reform NOW!
Tell Representative Joseph Crowley
We Need Single Payer Health Care!

Monday August 31 4:30-6:30pm
74-09 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights, Queens

As Congress prepares to return to Washington, any serious discussion of solutions for the nearly 50 million uninsured Americans has been pushed off the table.  The right wing has had a field day attacking government run health care--despite the fact that government run health care, in the form of Medicare, is one of the most popular, effective social services we have.  Congress could provide health care for everyone by simply supporting the Medicare for All Act (HR 676). But the lobbyists for private insurers and the drug companies are determined not to let anything come in the way of their profits.

Join us as we picket our Joe Crowley and demand he represent our needs in Washington!

A Global Lecture Series: Maternal Mortality
Tuesday, March 2nd 2010 12:00
A Global Lecture Series: Maternal Mortality

Maternal Mortality: One woman dies every minute and many more face long-term debilitating ill-health as a result of conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. Many of these deaths are preventable. Maternal mortality is a crucial issue all over the world. Since 2000, the world’s anti-poverty agenda has been dictated by the Millennium Development Goals. Of all the goals, cutting the maternal mortality ratio by 75% has seen by far the least progress, less than 1% per year by optimistic estimates. Join us in a discussion about Maternal Mortality, Maternal Health and this often overlooked human rights issue.

Speaker: Tariq Ali

Tariq Ali's new book, "The Duel: Pakistan on the Flight Path of American Power," weighs the prospects of those contending for power in the aftermath of Benazir Bhutto's assassination, and demonstrates Pakistan's unique influence on the emergence of a secure world or global conflagration.

Tariq Ali is a writer, journalist and film-maker. He was born in Lahore in 1943 and was educated at Oxford University, where he became involved in student politics, in particular with the movement against the war in Vietnam.

Some of his recent statements: “The west's 'good war' in Afghanistan has turned bad. A local solution, rather than a neocolonial one, is needed.”

“U.S. failure in Afghanistan is now evident and NATO desperation only too visible. Spreading the war to Pakistan would be a disaster for all sides. One way out of the impasse would require a withdrawal of all U.S./NATO forces, either preceded or followed by a regional pact to guarantee Afghan stability for the next ten years.”

The Cost of Counterterrorism: Power, Politics, and Liberty
Sunday, September 7th 2008 1 pm
Please join the Peace Task Force to listen to Dr. Laura K. Donohue, Fellow at CISAC and at the Center for Constitutional Law, Stanford Law School, speak on her new book,

The Cost of Counterterrorism: Power, Politics, and Liberty

To shed light on the impact of combating terrorism in liberal, democratic states, Laura Donohue talks about the cost of counterterrorist law arguing that the damage caused is significantly greater than first appears.

How has counterterrorist law impacted the balance of power between the branches of government?

In the aftermath of a terrorist attack political stakes are high; legislators fear being seen as lenient or indifferent and there is a heightened potential to grant the executive broader authorities without thorough debate.

The judiciary's role, too, is restricted.

From extended detention, interrogation, and anti-terrorist finance, to phone taps, watch lists, and censorship, Donohue examines laws in both the US and UK that have been promoted as increasing security at the expense of life, liberty, property, privacy, and free speech. As these two countries take a leading role in setting global counterterrorist norms, at stake is the future of liberal democracy.

THE CASE FOR SOCIALISM
Wednesday, September 10th 2008 7:00pm
SOCIALISM is based on the idea that we should use the vast resources of society to meet people’s needs. If people are hungry, they should be fed; if people are homeless, we should build homes for them; if people are sick, the best medical care should be available to them. Socialism would take the wealth of the rich and use it to meet the basic needs of all society. Instead of that kind of society, we have been through years of war for oil and empire, decades of rollbacks on workers’ wages and living-standards, attacks on civil rights and women’s rights, cuts in health-care, and more. On top of this, the growing economic crisis—foreclosures, food and fuel inflation, and increasing unemployment—are calling into question the ability of the system as it is currently set-up to function at all. Come to this forum to discuss how we can organize a society without war and racism, a society based on human need instead of corporate greed.

Buy One ~ Get One Free!

Anyone who reads the newspaper is well-acquainted with the human toll of war. Harder to see is the hidden environmental impact of military herbicides, radioactive contamination and other weapons byproducts. No more — with Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives, filmmakers Alice Day and Lincoln Day demonstrate in a dramatic way why it’s easier to make war than clean up it’s devastating environmental consequences. Post-screening panel discussion with the filmmakers and local environmental experts followed by a reception in the Furman Gallery.
