National Citizen Strike for Peace
February 28, 2003

All US citizens who oppose a war against Iraq are called to walk in the footsteps of Gandhi and Martin Luther King by joining a national strike for peace on Friday, February 28th.

In the tradition of nonviolent direct action, those who seek peace will on that day refuse to collaborate with our government's plan to launch a war for oil against a country that is already devastated by twelve years of US-led bombing and sanctions, a country in which at least a million innocent civilians have died at our hands, and a country that has no way to defend itself.

On February 28th we will instead bring business-as-usual to a halt in every town and city all over this nation. On that day our work will be peacemaking. We will not do our usual jobs and we will not buy anything, including gas.

In doing this we put our government leaders on notice

* that they do not have our consent to inflict yet more suffering and death on the people of Iraq.

* that we are not willing to exchange young American lives for the oil reserves that lie beneath Iraqi soil.

* that we see through their fear-mongering, their disinformation, and their news control.

* that they can expect widespread active resistance to any war they choose to launch with such callous disregard for the human cost.

By striking for peace we demonstrate to the powers in Washington DC that the people of the United States still do have power too and are not about to relinquish it to those who neither represent our interests nor speak in our name.

Plan of Action

This is a grassroots, decentralized initiative.

The first thing you can do to make the strike a powerful reality is spread the word in your networks and enlist support from the groups in your locale. Meanwhile, wear a green ribbon and adorn the public spaces of your community with green ribbons signifying your commitment to a just and peaceful world.

Notify the local media in advance about the strike, the reasons for it, and the action your group plans for that day.

On strike day February 28th, carry out group peacemaking activities of your own design. Here are some suggestions: bring our message to government, military, and media point of power sites; go door-to-door to talk with neighbors about what you're doing and why; register voters; hold letter-writing parties; do street theater; meditate for peace, then play music, dance, and generally kick up your heels for peace!

Be of good heart. We can do this.
