March 8th International Women's Day: Strikes, Rallies, and More! Saturday, March 8th 2003 As we invite you to take action on International Women's Day 2003 with women from many countries, we all know that it has never been so urgent to stop the world and change it. We live in terror that the US government will use its weapons of mass destruction, unleashing who knows what violence on the people and the environment. At the same time, media censorship can't hide an unfolding anti-war movement of millions, South and North, including in the US itself--a movement increasingly not only against war in Iraq, but against all wars...

When nearly 100 nations gathered in early December to sign a global treaty banning cluster bombs, the U.S. was conspicuously absent. And yet, the U.S. has been the world’s biggest user of these weapons, which always end up killing more civilians than soldiers.
President Obama and Congress can fix U.S. policy. In fact, they have already started. In March, Congress passed a law permanently banning exports of nearly all U.S.-made cluster bombs.
Now we need Congress to act to prevent any further use by U.S. troops. Call your senators on Monday, March 30 and ask them to co-sponsor the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act, S. 416. This legislation would prohibit the U.S. from using any cluster bombs that leave behind an unacceptably large number of landmine-like “dud” cluster submunitions—small bombs that keep on killing. It would also prohibit any use of these weapons in areas where civilians are normally present—like cities and villages. Increased support for this legislation in the Senate will show President Obama that he has the public’s backing to sign this treaty and send it to the Senate for ratification.

Multi-Day Event EVERY DAY UNTIL WE HAVE ACHIEVED OUR GOAL Greetings All,
I was pleased to find this organization's site because of the important campaign I am undertaking. I feel that this forum is viewed by intelligent, like-minded, progressive individuals who may be interested in helping out in a truly worthy cause. I am starting a nationwide, non-partisan petition campaign which will serve to pressure U.S. lawmakers to put an end to the Iraqi war. The petition will support a responsible and gradual withdrawal of the brave men and women of our military from the unjust and catastrophic war currently being prosecuted in the sovereign nation of Iraq. This petition campaign, once competed, will reach all 535 members of the United States Congress, as well several other influential politicians and government officials, including the President and Vice President of the United States. This is NOT about making a political statement; it is about making an AMERICAN statement.
There is no reason why over 3,000 young American soldiers should have made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives for a war based on faulty intelligence, lies, personal vendettas, and neo-conservative ideology. And there is certainly no reason why we should continue to offer up the lives of Americans in fighting an Iraqi Civil War. To date, it is estimated that as many as 6 million Americans have lost a close friend or family member in this conflict. It is time to end the bloodshed.
For this petition campaign I seek to secure 20 people per state to spearhead the signature gathering effort in their area. Each person will be responsible for collecting only 100 valid signatures. Obviously, if you are able and willing to gather more than this amount it will only help even more. At this rate, once the petition is successful and complete, it will contain over 100,000 signatures. This is a massive number of signatures, which cannot be ignored, and will serve to show just how many ordinary, patriotic Americans, regardless of political or moral alignment are against this horrible war. I am seeking assistance only in gathering the signatures in your area and forwarding your completed petition to me. I will not only be a fellow petitioner, but will be coordinating the national petition effort and seeing that the completed petition makes its way to the right people. I will be sending each states individual petition, comprised of a minimum of 2,000 signatures, to the respective state’s U.S. Senators and Representatives. I will then compile the national petition, signed by over 100,000 Americans, and forward it to several powerful lawmakers and influential politicians and government figures, including, but not limited to, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Minority Leader Trent Lott, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Minority Leader John Boehner, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Vice President Dick Cheney, and of course President George W. Bush.
Due to the urgency of this issue, I am undertaking a rapid and ambitious time table for completion of the petition campaign. We can obviously begin collecting signatures immediately, but I would like to have all petitioners confirm their participation no later than February 10, 2007. Additionally, my goal is to have completed and compiled the national petition and be able to mail copies to the appropriate recipients on March 20, 2007, the four year anniversary of the beginning of the war.
If you have any questions about the petition, wish to become a signature gatherer or make a donation to our effort, please e-mail at bringourtroopshome@yahoo.com as soon as possible. Please title the e-mail "Petition Campaign" and include in the body of the message your name, age, contact information, and city and state where you will be collecting signatures, along with any questions you may have. All petitioners will receive a "Petition Kit" as e-mail attachments which will include petition sheets, instructions on how to properly conduct the petition and collect signatures, what to do with your completed petition, my contact information and a draft of the letter which I will include along with the completed petitions once sent to the recipients. Also, anyone who wishes to help out but cannot commit their time and effort as a petitioner may also make donations, and can obtain information via e-mail. If you think about how many pages of copies will have to be paid for and how much postage will cost to mail out all of the completed petitions, the costs I will incur will be astronomical. I am taking the initiative to conduct this petition because it is something I care deeply about and strongly believe in and the financial cost to me will be relatively small in comparison to the cost incurred by those who have died or lost a friend or family member in this conflict.
I will be posting this on several other websites, forums, message boards and blogs to garner maximum exposure and reach as many people who can help as possible. I will gladly accept recommendations on sites on which to post, or for that matter any recommendations or advice on the campaign in general. I thank you for your time in reading this post and for your anticipated assistance in the petition campaign.
CONFLICT IS INEVITABLE, BUT COMBAT IS OPTIONAL.
-Max Lucade

The Music for Peace Project all day Yearly Event Join a global network of Concerts for Peace: The Music for Peace Project, March 31 - April 2, 2006
The Music for Peace Project is a global effort to fill the world with music as a call for peace.
Since its inception in 2003, the annual 3-day Music For Peace Project has sponsored 251 concerts in 30 countries on every continent. Founded by the Musicians' Alliance for Peace (MAP), an international community that promotes empathy, ethical thought and critical social involvement through music, each Music for Peace Project has been shared with audiences as diverse as the music itself.
The Music for Peace Project 2006 continues this tradition. By coordinating a vast number of concerts worldwide between March 31 - April 2, 2006, the Music for Peace Project 2006 will bring popular and media attention to international peace efforts while building a global community of socially conscious artists.
To help us reach our goal this year of 500 concerts spanning every continent during the weekend of March 31 - April 2, 2006, we are asking musicians worldwide to perform a concert in the name of peace, or to dedicate a pre-existing concert to the Project. All one must do is complete a simple, 30-second online form -- any musician can participate. To join, and learn more, please go to http://www.m4p.org/join.html or write MAP at info@m4p.org.
Music has the power to inspire compassion and foster understanding between cultures while deepening the bonds that form our communities. Please consider joining this international, non-partisan call for peace and help to create a global community of musicians united in the active quest for peace.

Yearly Event Missed Opportunities: Iraq and the Balkans
TWO FOCI
The focus of this course is contrafactual in the sense that it will discuss what could have been done at the relevant time to apply the principle of peace by peaceful means. It is also future-oriented since we will work on what can still be done to move the two conflict formations in the direction of peace. (Not everything that could have been done earlier can still be done today).
DIAGNOSIS
Naturally, we will start out by analysing the two conflicts, look at similarities and differences. We will contrast real reality with virtual-media reality. How did major players see the conflicts?
DE FACTO PROGNOSIS AND THERAPY
Next we will go through the various things that were done by various actors in the international so-called community, allegedly to solve conflicts. Was that they main goal and if not, what other real interests were at play?
What did they expect to be the consequences of their interventions- threats, negotiations, bombings, UN and other missions, humanitarian aid, political pressue, sanctions, etc. Why did this not lead to peace in any real sense but only to stopping the wars? Were some actors peace-effective? Were others actually violence-promoting?
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
What should and could international actors have done instead had they made a different diagnosis and prognosis and had real interests in conflict-resolution? Like in most other parts of this course we will, when it comes to the Balkans, deal mainly with Croatia and Kosovo+Macedonia - all the others can't be handled in any detail.
WHAT TO DO TODAY AND TOMORROW?
How can we characterise the situation in the Balkans and Iraq today - strong and weak aspects of the interventions. What to learn?
Brainstorms - based on theory, knowledge and creative ideas - on what we think can still be done tp promote peace in these areas? Strategies- who can do what and who cannot do it anymore?
End note:
- Both these conflict formations are extremely complex, both are focal points for world (dis)order; they have far-reaching consequences way beyond themselves (and we'll touch upon that too);
- Participants should not enroll because they think they will know everything about both; that is impossible. If at the end of the course they can just begin to feel the complexities and see some options and strategies for peace and justice there - and thus have acquired some tools to go on much deeper on their own - then the course will have achieved its purpose.
Literature
Will mainly be drawn from a few books/chapters and the marterials available at www.transnational.org and links from it.
About Jan Oberg, the coourse director, read more here:http://www.transnational.org/tff/people/j_oberg.html
