| Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy Statement Against War
by Food First/Institute for Food and Development, Food First/Institute for Food and Development
January 10th, 2003
Food First stands categorically opposed to the impending war on Iraq, and to the range of conflicts, covert and overt, in which the U.S. government is currently embroiled. As an organization dedicated to ending hunger, we cannot stand by and watch while the U.S. war machine gears itself up for another outburst. War hurts everyone (except the war machine itself). |

First, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the Sierra Club's decision to help launch the "Win Without War" coalition. This was a very important historical step for the Club, and a step in the right direction. More, however, is needed. |

| Statement by Iraqi-American Student
by Rana Abdul-Aziz
December 1st, 2002
If one learns anything from living under a totalitarian system it is how to decipher the news and sift through official propaganda. I think my skepticism with the information and news I get developed because of this background. When I was in Iraq, my parents always got our news from other sources, other than those fed to us by the Iraqi regime. And later on when we lived in America, we knew that what we heard on the news regarding Iraq was not true. Contact with our family there revealed to us what was actually happening. |
| Chicanas and Chicanos Speak Out Against War -- From the Chicano Moratorium 2002
November 25th, 2002
We call on Congress to reject the Bush administration's resolution to authorize military action against Iraq. We do not want Congress or the United Nations to delegate authority to the Bush administration to carry out a "1st strike" attack on Iraq or any other nation. We have seen no evidence to support the administration's allegations that Iraq constitutes a threat to U.S. national security. We believe that military escalation is not the road to lessening tensions in the Middle East nor will it reduce the threat of terrorism. |
| United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Statement on Iraq
November 13th, 2002
As we Catholic Bishops meet here in Washington, our nation, Iraq and the world face grave choices about war and peace, about pursuing justice and security. These are not only military and political choices, but also moral ones because they involve matters of life and death. Traditional Christian teaching offers ethical principles and moral criteria that should guide these critical choices. |

| Sean Penn Statement, Published as an Advertisement in the Washington Post
October 18th, 2002
Mr. Bush:
Good morning sir. Like you, I am a father and an American. Like you, I consider myself a patriot. Like you, I was horrified by the events of this past year, concerned for my family and my country. However, I do not believe in a simplistic and inflammatory view of good and evil. I believe this is a big world full of men, women, and children who struggle to eat, to love, to work, to protect their families, their beliefs, and their dreams. My father, like yours, was decorated for service in World War II. He raised me with a deep belief in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as they should apply to all Americans who would sacrifice to maintain them and to all human beings as a matter of principle. |
| I'm an American Tired of American Lies
by Woody Harrelson, Guardian/UK
October 17th, 2002
The man who drives me to and from work is named Woody too. A relief to me, as it minimizes the chance of my forgetting his name. I call him Woodman and he calls me Wood. He has become my best friend here, even though he's upset that I have quit drinking beer. He's smart, funny, and there's nothing he hasn't seen in 33 years behind the wheel of his black cab. He drove me for a while before I felt confident he liked me; he doesn't like people easily, especially if they have a rap for busting up black cabs. |
