There is no "due date" for these petitions. Use them at events
and vigils not only to collect signatures, but to start a dialogue with
passersby, and to find people interested in joining your local group. Once you have finished collecting signatures, you have a few options:
1. Make an appointment with your Representative and/or Senators. Present the petition signatures to your elected official(s) as part of the meeting. Your meeting will be most effective if you organize a delegation that includes community leaders (clergy, business people, educators, etc.) in the visit. Please report back on these visits to
the UFPJ legislative coordinator at sue@unitedforpeace.org.
2. Send copies of the petitions to your Representative and
Senators along with a handwritten letter from yourself, as well as any
press clippings from the event(s) where the signatures were collected. It is best to send these packages to the local office, as mail to DC
offices is still delayed in order to check for anthrax.
3. Come to the UFPJ Congressional Education Day in Washington on
May 21-22 and deliver the petitions to your legislators as part of your
lobby visit. For more info, email: sue@unitedforpeace.org.
4. Petitions may be sent to the UFPJ Washington office, but it is
far more effective if they are presented to lawmakers by their
constituents. UFPJ Washington Office, 1100 Wayne Ave. #1020, Silver Spring, MD 20910
