We are fast approaching the April 24 – 26 Peace & Planet Mobilization for a Nuclear-Free, Peaceful, Just and Sustainable World in New York City and around the world! UFPJ is centrally involved. As one of the three overall coordinators, with Joseph Ge
rson of AFSC and Kevin Martin of Peace Action, I represent UFPJ (as well as my own organization, Western States Legal Foundation) on the International Coordinating Committee. And UFPJ’s part-time social media and organizing whiz, Matt De Vlieger, has been lending his formidable talents to the New York City organizing committee.
Momentum is building! Nearly 300 organizations around the world have already endorsed Peace & Planet. Is your group one of them? If not, I urge you to read the Call to Action and click here to add your group’s name.
The Peace & Planet Mobilization will open with an International Conference April 24-25 at the Cooper Union and culminate in the streets of New York for a mass Rally, March, and Festival on April 26, the eve of the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. While the largest numbers of people will be turning out in NYC, I hope your organization – large or small, near or far – will support this Mobilization, helping us to demonstrate broad and deep international support as we use this occasion to call for:
- The abolition of nuclear weapons
- The just and peaceful resolution of global wars and confrontations
- Economic justice, including moving the money from the Pentagon to meet human needs
- Racial equity and the demilitarization of policing
- Environmental justice and urgent responses to climate crises
Our goals are two-fold: to demand immediate negotiations for the total elimination of nuclear weapons, and to use this Mobilization to strengthen and connect our movements. Your endorsement will help us do that.
If your organization is in the region, we hope you’ll mobilize your members to participate in our events in NYC. If you’re farther away, you can “wave goodbye to nuclear weapons” by organizing a local action as part of the “Global Wave”, which will start at the rally in NYC on April 26 and make its way around the globe (going west), with actions at 1pm in each time zone.
Finally, we also ask you to promote the Peace & Planet petition to your members and invite you to engage with us on Facebook and Twitter to help us spread the word about this Mobilization, so that more and more people are aware of the work being done to connect peace, justice, and environmental struggles and to abolish nuclear weapons.
