RSVP  • Free Forum on El Chocó, Columbia with Steve Cagan
Tuesday, December 2nd 2008 7:00 p.m.
EL CHOCÓ, COLUMBIA: Resistance for Survival

Conversation and slide show with activist photographer STEVE CAGAN

Activist photographer Steve Cagan has been working for over five years on a project in El Chocó, Colombia. El Chocó is the northwestern-most department of Colombia, right on the border with Panama. It's an area of great natural beauty and incredible bio-diversity, and home to river-centered Afro-Colombian and indigenous cultures. The area has been isolated from and ignored by the rest of the country for a long time. While their reasonable demands for public services such as health and education were not met, they could still live well on the bounty of the rain forest.

This life and the whole area are under great threat, as Colombian and international economic interests are determined to eliminate the rain forest to develop large industrial agricultural and infrastructure projects. If nothing changes, the rain forest of El Chocó, with its important environmental treasures and the special cultures it shelters, will soon be gone, probably within a generation. The one hope is the potential of the local communities to organize and resist the pressures to abandon their homes.

Steve has been photographing the environment and the people of the area and working closely with the few organizations committed to defending the people of the region. This month's "Other Voices" will feature the story of El Chocó as seen through Steve's incredible photographs and narrative.

Free and open to the public -- Be a part of the studio audience! Wheelchair accessible.

Part of the "Other Voices" television series produced by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center. Broadcast live on Mid-Peninsula Community Media Cable Channel 27, webcast at www.midpenmedia.org, and rebroadcast throughout December -- schedule at PeaceandJustice.org/index.php?topic=tvschedule.

RSVP  • Robert Jensen: Beyond Elections
Tuesday, January 13th 2009 7:30 p.m.
Robert Jensen takes us:

Beyond Elections - Sustaining Our Commitments to Justice and Sustainability

Many in the United States -- and around the world -- are rightly celebrating the coming end of eight years of reactionary rule in Washington. But politics is more than elections. Where should people concerned with social justice and ecological sustainability focus our attention during the Obama administration? What long-term vision should inform our short-term choices? Writer and activist Robert Jensen will discuss how we should analyze the contemporary problems we face, articulate a vision for the future, and act on those ideas in the coming year.

Robert Jensen is a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin and board member of the Third Coast Activist Resource Center. His latest book, All My Bones Shake, will be published in 2009 by Soft Skull Press. He also is the author of Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity (South End Press, 2007); The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege (City Lights, 2005); Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity (City Lights, 2004); and Writing Dissent: Taking Radical Ideas from the Margins to the Mainstream (Peter Lang, 2002).

After more than five years the war in Iraq roars on with roughly one third of Iraq's 26 million people killed, wounded or displaced; more than 4,000 US soldiers dead, hundreds of thousands suffering severe physical and psychological wounds, and trillions of dollars going up in smoke. Instead of withdrawing forces, US policy makers are expanding combat in Afghanistan and into Pakistan, ordering assaults in Syria and threatening to Invade Iran. They Continue to support Israel's brutal occupation of Palestinians that repeatedly turns into regional war - most recently in the summer of 2006. With a full blown economic crisis bringing skyrocketing home foreclosures, rising unemployment, loan freezes, and collapsing pensions, war funds are needed at home now more than ever!

Join activists from across Connecticut as part of a week of nationally coordinated actions to demand that our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters be brought home now!
